In extraordinarily general terms, there are 3 main tactics employed. You must be able to hop between techniques quickly as the action of the game unfolds.
The Blockade
This is comprised of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you might achieve, to block in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable course of action at the start of the game. You can build the wall anywhere inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.
The Blitz
This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your opposer tosses an early two and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your competitor is now in serious difficulty because they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!
The Backgame
This course of action is where you have two or higher checkers in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The strongest areas for anchors are close to your opponent’s lower points and also on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is critical for an effective backgame: besides, there’s no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this right away, while your competitor is getting their checkers home, considering that you do not have any other additional checkers to shift! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your challenger gives you a chance to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to try and get your challenger to get them in this situation!
